Alternative rock · late 1980s–1990s
Genre
Guitar music built from layers of distortion, effects and half-buried vocals.
Shoegaze emerged in the United Kingdom in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Bands set soft, often indistinct vocals inside layers of distorted and heavily processed guitars, using effects pedals, reverb and volume to create a dense, immersive sound. The name came from performers looking down at their pedals on stage. Closely related to dream pop, it faded from view in the mid-1990s and later returned through new generations of bands around the world.
