Place
The Atlantic edge of Europe, where fado, guitar rock and a new electronic underground share the same radios.
Portugal’s music runs from fado — the urban song of Lisbon and Coimbra, inscribed by UNESCO in 2011 — to the Portuguese rock of the 1980s, the festival pop called pimba and the electronic scene that grew around Lisbon’s suburbs. Its ties with Cape Verde, Angola and Brazil keep a Lusophone current flowing: morna, kuduro and kizomba are heard here as naturally as fado. From Portugal the graph opens towards Lisbon and Porto, the saudade that colours much of its music, and the countries it shares sounds with.
